Atlantis was first mentioned by Plato in 360 BCE and has since been a city that has been the cause of much speculation as to its existence. Plato's tale of this city reads alike a fable where the utopian kingdom is said to have been swallowed up by the Atlantic Ocean and now lies securely hidden deep beneath its waters.
Plato wrote that Atlantis was founded by the god Poseidon and named after Poseidon's son Atlas who he also then appointed as its ruler. Situated somewhere in the Atlantic ocean the city was swallowed beneath its waters and there its underwater ruins reportedly lie. Is Atlantis a legendary island city reclaimed by the ocean waters surrounding it or simply a fictional land created within the imaginative mind of the philosopher Plato? The fact or fiction of this legend remain a mystery. Its very existence still questionable.
The ruins of this kingdom have been searched for by many but has yet to be found. Atlantis has been and remains the discussion of much debate. Without visible proof no one is certain of the authenticity of the lost city of Atlantis. The legend of this city still exists but it appears that only time can unlock the secret to this kingdom's legitimacy.
